A Weekend in Marrakesh

With its exotic mix of Arabic and French influences, known for bustling souks, stylish riads, and family-friendly attractions, Marrakesh is both a cultural hub and sophisticated escape.

Where to Shop

There’s nothing quite like the bustling souk or markets in Marrakesh. An assault on the senses, the colourful, crazy stalls and the very buzz of life is quite the experience! A real-life Aladdin’s cave of goodies – a treasure trove of slippers, lanterns and toys, all sparkling and shiny. Not to mention the odd chameleon, or feral kitten zig-zagging through the lanes. Enjoy the friendly haggling, and if you’re too tired to walk, hail a tuk tuk that can whizz through the narrow, chaotic alleyways of the Medina’s souk!

Where to Escape to

Head out of town for a camel ride in the most scenic of settings. Whether you choose to head to the foot of the Atlas Mountains or to the vast palm grove outside town, one can climb up onto the gentle giants and go for a wander taking in the arid landscapes. The best part? Meeting junior camels and having a cup of mint tea with the locals under the tent. Day excursions can also be set up heading out on sand buggies. epicmorocco.co.uk

Take a Walk

Don’t miss the famous Jamaa el Fna packed with human souls and the odd “dancing” cobra. The square is packed with life and tourist attractions, from Henna artists, to the fresh juice vans, and many, many souvenir stalls. Around the corner you’ll find the stunning Koutoubia Mosque with its 12th-century minaret. Visit the enchanting Bahia Palace, and the intricate Saadian Tombs. The Jardin Secret provides a serene, lush escape nearby. Another must? The Jardin de Majorelle, a legendary garden, now one of the most visited places in Morocco thanks to its vibrant blues and insta-worthy backdrops. It’s most famous as the one-time home of Yves Saint Laurent in the 60s and now hosts a YSL museum, too.

Where to Eat

If you want to go local, try Le Café des Epices in the heart of the souk for wraps and Kefta sandwiches, Moroccan salads and Tagines. For a more elaborate rooftop experience try the Terrace des Epices, also an insta favourite thanks to its cool decor and views. To push the boat out, visit the legendary La Mamounia palace. Ultra-chic, its Italian restaurant has an Art Deco vibe and delicious trattoria menu from chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

The Food

The resort offers so many dining options – all a real treat. Breakfast is a highlight here, featuring a lavish buffet with options ranging from croissants, muffins and cupcakes to freshly baked breads and pancakes. There’s a variety of savoury selections, including cheese boards, smoked salmon, salads, made-to-order eggs and more. And all that can be enjoyed al fresco overlooking the beautiful pool.

For lunch, take a buggy to Le Sabra out at the golf club. Another great option where you’ll find everything from delicious wraps to burgers and carbonara on the menu. The view over the golf green and the mountains beyond is ultra relaxing.

Candlelit dinner at Al Ain, the Moroccan restaurant, includes dishes like roast pumpkin soup and of course Royal Couscous, or classic Tagines, served with stunning sunset views over the Atlas Mountains accompanied by live music. Another option, the Capricci specialises in Italian food, from carpaccio starters to sophisticated pasta dishes or roast lamb, followed by incredible XL brownies!

Where to Stay

Escape Marrakesh’s bustling energy with a short 15-minute trip to the luxurious Fairmont resort. This serene estate offers everything from a chic, all-white Clarins spa to an inviting kids’ club, fitness centre, multiple pools, and a selection of diverse restaurants, providing the ideal relaxing retreat. fairmont.com

The Rooms

The family suites are perfect if you like your space. The two bedroom suites overlook the stunning exotic gardens with bougainvillaea, palm trees and olive trees aplenty. The overall look is 1001 nights exoticism.

The room comes with all the trimmings, flatscreen TVs and plush marble bathrooms, not to mention outdoor showers and giant walk-in wardrobes. The decor is dark and luxurious, mocha brown mosaic tiles, cream marble flagstones and lovely shaggy Berber carpets with black criss cross motifs.
